In 1988 Pope John Paul II wrote that “progress in Christian life cannot be achieved except by continually promoting among the faithful, and above all among priests, a warm and living knowledge of Scripture.” He went on to say that “The most urgent task is that of the biblical and liturgical formation of the people of God, both pastors and faithful.” Nonetheless, many priests – even priests who went to good seminaries – have told us that their formation in Sacred Scripture was the weakest part of their training for priesthood.
The Seminarian’s Bookshelf is one of the ways that the St. Paul Center is working to address these concerns. It is a selection of ten of the titles produced by the Center itself or by our Fellows that we believe will make an excellent supplement to the Biblical Theology formation of our future priests. Our plan is to present this entire collection to each of the seminarians who receive scholarships to attend our Letter & Spirit conferences. Of course, they are also an excellent resource for lay people who are serious about growing in their knowledge of God’s Word.
